Short Cuts: Eve Psalti, Senior Director at Microsoft Artificial Intelligence

Tech startup creation and entrepreneurship experimentation

In my “Short Cuts” conversation, I am hosting my dear friend Eve Psalti who is the Senior Director at Microsoft Artificial Intelligence. She has worked at Microsoft for over 16 years, did a stint at Google, and returned to Microsoft 2.5 years ago. Some say, her departure was the end of AI dominance for Google ;-).

Generative AI like GPT-3, DALL-E, and ChatGPT have taken the world by storm recently. There is a lot of hype and demand around these technologies. At Microsoft, Eve works on bringing generative AI capabilities like GPT-3 exclusively to Azure AI. These models enable new applications across departments and industries.

Some potential startup ideas utilizing AI that Eve discussed: 1) Healthcare - predictive analytics, personalized medicine, medical imaging, virtual health systems 2) Education - personalized learning, intelligent tutoring systems, automated grading 3) Financial services - fraud detection, customer service, advisory services

Current models still have limitations, can hallucinate results, and require human guidance. They need transparency, testing, and governance around AI to address bias, fairness, privacy concerns. This requires responsibility from tech companies building it, organizations using it, and governments regulating it.

We are still far from AGI but there is a lot of potential in AI as a tool. In summary, Eve Psalti provided a balanced perspective on the state of AI - acknowledging the hype and potential but also the current limitations and need for responsible development and use of the technology.
